Can I take my cat to the beach? | 6 do´s and 6 don’ts.

Short answer: Absolutely! Taking your cat to the beach can be a great experience for both of you, as long as your cat enjoys going out and doesn't get stressed by it. We know cats are very territorial, independent, and routine animals, but that doesn't mean they don't enjoy exploring new places. Anyone who has ever owned a cat knows how much they love to go out and see different locations.

Now, for a more detailed answer, it's important to determine if going to a new place might stress your cat or if it doesn't handle the heat typical of many beaches well. If that's the case, it's better not to take them. It would be very stressful and uncomfortable for them, resulting in a bad experience. Knowing your cat, you should decide whether they would enjoy the outing or not.

I am someone who lives on the beach and owns three cats, so for them, going to the beach is easy—they live there and are more than accustomed to visiting it. However, I know this isn't the case for all cats and their humans. If you find yourself in this situation and are considering taking your cat with you to the beach, remember to ask yourself if your kitty enjoys exploring new places and doesn't get stressed by new environments. If you decide to bring your cat along on your beach trip, here are some do's and don'ts for you to consider.

Do´s

Check Beach Regulations

1. Make sure that the beach you visit allows pets. I recommend La Paz, Mexico, which has spectacular pet-friendly beaches. Don't forget to bring a bag and a scoop for their waste.

2. Harness

Anyone who has had a cat knows that often they understand us, but they just don't care, LOL. Therefore, always use a harness with a leash to keep your cat safe and close to you. Remember, not everyone likes pets and since it's a public place, we must respect others.

3. Sun and Heat Protection

Protect your cat from the heat, don't forget to bring an umbrella, or something to shield your furry friend. Remember that cats usually have a lot of fur to protect them from the cold, so they may feel the heat more intensely, which is why you need to protect them a lot at the beach.

4. Hydration

Always, always make sure that your kitty has access to fresh and clean water. Remember that water on the ground can get sandy, so it needs to be replaced with fresh water frequently. Always carry a water bottle exclusively for the cat, so it will always have water available.

5. Gradual Introduction

It's very important to acclimate your cat to the beach environment gradually to avoid overwhelming and stressing them. Remember, take it slow and if you see your cat getting too stressed, it's better to leave. Don't forget that cats can hyperventilate and start shedding fur when they are very tense, which is a sign that it's really better to go.

6. Carry a First-Aid Kit

As a simple precaution, carry a basic first-aid kit, especially for any minor injuries (we know they are very curious) or irritation that might occur.

Don’ts

1. Forcing Your Cat into the Water

Never, ever, EVER force your cat into the water if they don't want to go, and definitely don’t throw them in. They will be very uncomfortable and scared, and it will be a horrible experience for them.

2. Letting Your Cat Roam Freely

We know our cats are well-behaved and never get into mischief, LOL. But out of respect for others, don't let them roam free without a harness. It’s also for their own safety because if they run off or go exploring, you’ll have a lot of trouble finding them. Believe me, I know what I’m talking about.

3. Ignoring the Heat

Cats can dehydrate quickly or suffer from heatstroke if they don't have enough shade or water available, so make sure to keep an eye on them to ensure they are calm and comfortable.

4. Forgetting to Clean Up

For the love of God, never fail to clean up your cat's waste in a public place. Otherwise, it will become increasingly difficult to find places that welcome them.

5. Overlooking Post-Beach Care

Once your beach day is over, use a damp towel to wipe off any salt water or sand that may have gotten on their fur, their little nose, or their paws. I don’t need to remind you to be gentle, unless you want a loud scolding in public from your furry friend.

6. Not Having Fun Together

If you bring your cat to the beach, it's for you both to enjoy great moments together. Don't just forget about him or keep him tethered with his harness. Make sure he has enjoyable moments with you, which could range from walking with you on the beach, swimming a little, or simply sleeping on your lap. Whatever makes him happy.

In conclusion, as someone who adores both cats and the beach, I believe these simple do's and don'ts will help you take your furry friend for a great day out with you, as long as your cat isn't stressed by visiting new places. After all, isn't that what all of us cat owners want—to have a good time with them?
