Think about it, there's no need to carry heavy luggage; it's really unnecessary. Instead, enjoy traveling light; this will make your trips and transfers much more comfortable and efficient, enhancing your travel experience. Fortunately, we no longer live in a time when it was necessary to bring a multitude of heavy suitcases on our trips, often worrying more about them than enjoying the journey. We repeat, it's not necessary to bring a lot of things to have a great trip, and in this article, we want to give you practical tips and strategies to achieve traveling light.
Trust us. Make a detailed list of what you need for your trip. This has two benefits: first, it ensures you don’t forget anything really important, and second, it helps you avoid overpacking. By doing this, you help your mind visualize what you truly need, and if you’re like my best friend, this list will allow you to check off all the items before you leave, reducing your anxiety. Additionally, you’ll have a base list for future trips, which you can adjust as needed. So, make the list!
You'll agree that there’s no point in taking a bikini to the North Pole or an Eskimo coat to Cancun, right? So, with that principle in mind, research the weather at your destination and avoid packing clothes or accessories that you simply won’t need. Also, consider the activities you’ll be doing, such as hiking, dining, or going to the beach, so you have everything you need without overpacking. This way, you can travel light at all times.
There are amazing suitcases out there—huge, full of compartments, made of durable and resistant materials, true luxury pieces. Unfortunately, they also tend to be very heavy. If your goal is to travel light, it’s better to choose a suitcase or backpack made of lightweight yet sturdy materials. This allows you to make full use of the available space and keeps your belongings protected. Plus, during long airport walks, lightweight suitcases are simply easier to carry and handle, and they can even save you a few dollars if you don’t have to check them in. When selecting your suitcase, make sure it can accommodate the list you prepared in advance. If it does, great! Don’t be tempted to buy a bigger suitcase just because it’s on sale, because you’ll inevitably end up overpacking.
Don’t forget to use packing cubes or organizers. These allow for better organization of your suitcase by dividing it into sections. There are even some that allow you to remove the air, compressing items like clothing, saving you space and reducing weight. They also help keep your electronics separated and protected, as well as any accessories you decide to bring. Packing cubes are a great idea; just don’t forget to stick to your list, because seeing extra space might tempt you to pack more items you don’t need.
You don't need to pack outfits for every single occasion and moment during your trip. At least not if you want to travel light. Packing versatile clothing that you can mix and match for different occasions will mean you need to bring less clothing. Bring some basic, neutral-colored pieces so you can create multiple outfits with just a few items. For example, as we all know, a classic white t-shirt can be paired with different pants or skirts to create various looks. This is just one example to emphasize that to travel light, you don't need to bring a lot of different clothes and you can still look amazing.
Remember, footwear is one of the most space-consuming items in your suitcase, so we should follow the same principle as with clothing: versatile shoes that can be worn on various occasions and are comfortable. To give some examples, a pair of walking shoes that are also suitable for casual dinners, along with a pair of lightweight sandals or flip-flops, might be enough for most trips. While it's tempting, don't bring too many shoes, or you simply won't be able to travel light.
It's impossible not to bring them, we know, but also consider packing only the accessories you will actually use and that complement your outfits. A foldable hat, a multi-purpose scarf, and a belt can add functionality without taking up much space. Finally, choose simple, easily combinable jewelry that can be worn with multiple outfits. Remember, less is more when it comes to accessories in your luggage.
Never bring your personal care products in their original, often large, containers. Instead, transfer them into travel-sized bottles which allow you to save space and comply with liquid regulations on flights. This way, you can bring the necessary amount of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and toothpaste without the unnecessary weight and bulk of large containers. Don’t forget to label each bottle to avoid confusion when using them.
Before packing and while making your list, consider if it’s really important to bring your iPad and digital camera, or if your iPhone will suffice. Remember, we're trying to travel light and need to bring only what we will actually use. Your smartphone can replace the camera, GPS, and more, meaning you’ll only need one device along with its charger and power adapters if you’re traveling abroad. The iPad is useful for watching movies in bed, but think about whether it’s worth the space and weight it will take up. Of course, if it’s a business trip, you might need to bring not only the iPad but also a laptop, making it unavoidable to carry their weight and volume. However, try to bring only the essential chargers and accessories without duplicating them; for instance, the cable that charges your iPhone can also charge your iPad and MacBook, just make sure to bring the respective charger.
Whenever possible, carry digital copies stored in the cloud of important documents like your passport, ID, reservations, and travel insurance. This provides a backup in case you lose the physical documents. Additionally, it’s better to carry little cash and instead use credit cards, which come with insurance for any unforeseen events.
In conclusion, traveling light doesn't have to be problematic or difficult. As we’ve seen, it’s quite easy to achieve a light suitcase for our trip with some planning and organization, but also a bit of discipline to avoid packing things we know we won't need, but for some reason, want to bring. Stick to your list and you’ll see how packing and traveling light becomes something you can easily achieve.
